On Tuesday, November 22, 2016, at a beautiful and emotional ceremony, Dr. Lilia Abron, President and CEO of PEER Consultants, P.C., was inducted into the prestigious Tau Beta Pi organization, DC Alpha Chapter as an Eminent Engineer.
The Tau Beta Pi Association is a national engineering honor society founded at Lehigh University in 1885 by Dr. Edward Higginson Williams, Jr., “to mark in a fitting manner those who have conferred honor upon their Alma Mater by distinguished scholarship and exemplary character as undergraduates in engineering, or by their attainments as alumni in the field of engineering, and to foster a spirit of liberal culture in engineering colleges.”
Dr. Abron is among only a select number of candidates to receive this highest honor and explains her emotions regarding this achievement: “While sitting in the induction ceremony and listening to the words being said, I realized the enormity of this recognition. I was quite overwhelmed and I began to tear up for a moment because I realized the weight on me now to live up to DC Alpha Chapter’s expectations. A very high bar indeed.”
This, however, represents only one of Dr. Abron’s many achievements throughout her distinguished career as an environmental engineer. She is the first African-American woman in the nation to earn a Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering, and the first African-American to start an engineering consulting firm focused on environmental issues. She was also one of the first professionals in the field to suggest and demonstrate that sustainability initiatives can rapidly advance the condition of the impoverished sector worldwide.
For more than two decades, as the Founder of PEER Africa, Dr. Abron, along with her partner Douglas “Mothusi” Guy, has established innovative “best practice solutions” for environmentally sound and sustainable projects in the built environment that contribute to the eradication of poverty, and promote and enhance local economic development in the destitute communities in South Africa.
We want to take this time to sincerely congratulate Dr. Abron on this great achievement and for all the hard work she has put into advancing the engineering field, leading up to this day. We are all very proud to call her our President and CEO and look forward to her future contributions to the environmental engineering world and the community at large.
