The Energy Associate will be responsible for managing clearly defined tasks and projects by completing basic energy analysis and calculations, providing project support to Engineering technical staff and participating in the development and delivery of market-based services. A strong personal commitment to the mission, vision, goals and values of the DC Sustainable Energy Utility (DC SEU) is a requirement.

Knowledge, Education, & Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical/electrical engineering or equivalent with up to 1-year relevant experience in technical analysis, project assistance or administrative experience or a combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and skills are acquired.

  • Must have a working knowledge and understanding of building systems, building energy use, building construction and energy analysis techniques.

  • Must have strong oral, written and interpersonal skills.

  • Proactive and positive attitude, committed to improving technical and soft skills.

  • Must be proficient with Microsoft Word, Excel, modeling and other software applications.

  • Must be able to demonstrate ability to be organized, detail-oriented and accurate.

  • Must be able to handle multiple tasks and competing priorities in a dynamic and fast-paced environment.

The Director is responsible for providing leadership and management of and technical direction to the water and wastewater engineering and sciences section and team. The Director must be able to set high and achievable performance and operational standards for the team; and, encourage the team to meet goals efficiently and professionally. 

The Director is responsible for leading the team to perform planning and feasibility studies, design and preparation of engineering plans and specifications, cost estimates, operations and management programs, value engineering, construction management and project closeout; vertical and horizontal asset management; and energy management services.

Additional responsibilities entail training and mentoring staff; being an active participant in strategic planning initiatives; marketing and business planning, development and execution; proposal preparation; client outreach; and active participation in professional organizations.   

    Knowledge, Education, & Experience:

    • Master’s degree in Civil or Environmental Engineering. Ph.D. is preferred. 
    • Professional Engineer (PE) license is required; Project Management Professional (PMP) certification or similar is desired.
    • Minimum 12 - 15 years of demonstrated experience in engineering modeling, planning and design for water and wastewater systems and associated piping, appurtenances, and related systems (storage, reuse, energy management). 
    • Must have the ability to prepare and review detailed engineering design drawings and specifications.
    • Must have the ability to manage and direct AUTOCAD operations.
    • Must have proven and demonstrated technical grasp of water engineering and sciences.
    • Must have technical experience with scientific studies and engineering design skills in the water media with an emphasis on potable water, storm water, domestic wastewater, and fresh waters of the US.
    • Must have demonstrable experience managing people and leading multi-disciplinary teams.
    • Must possess excellent oral and written skills, with the ability to analyze and solve technical problems. 
    • Must be proficient with Microsoft Office Suite:  Excel, Word, PowerPoint and other software applications.
    • Knowledge of pipeline inspection, rehabilitation and condition assessment is highly desired.  
    • Board Certification in Environmental Engineering and Science (AAEES), active membership in professional organizations such as ASCE, AWWA, WEF, etc. is desired.
